The Spanish colony ruled for almost 300 years (1523-1821) and Guatemala takes great pride in celebrating Independence Day on September 15. The entire country celebrates this holiday with patriotism and national pride. "Greeted with a sea of blue and white flags at every turn and sounds of whistles, marching bands, and the national anthems" is how the author described this event. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua celebrate with Guatemala commemorating their long-awaited liberation from Spanish rulers. The "running of the torch" relay remains a tradition.The traditions came from independence hero, Maria Dolores Bedoys, who ran through the streets carrying a lantern as a symbol of hope. Relay runners run 350 km across the five Central American countries. Although Independence Day is September 15th, Guatemalans prepare well in advanced sporting colors of their national flag, children drumming, elaborate bunting hanging, parades, music, and bands. When Independence Day arrives, streets come alive and everybody celebrates. At the end of the day, there is dancing, food and fireworks. Guatemalan Independence Day is one of the most festive holidays that is celebrated with excitement and pride.
